Newer investigations with humans have shown that the level of sexual hormones and the menstrual cycle might be important factors for the activation of cortical networks (2,3). The aim of this study is to examine systematically possible gender differences and menstrual cycle effects using a difficult synonym generation task, during which behavioral gender differences had recently been reported (4). There are just a few previous studies that have addressed gender differences in verbal fluency and other language tasks (5-8), and results remain inconsistent.

Functional anatomy of visuo-spatial working memory during mental rotation is influenced by sex, menstrual cycle, and sex steroid hormones.

Recent observations indicate that sex and level of steroid hormones may influence cortical networks associated with specific cognitive functions, in particular visuo-spatial abilities. The present study probed the influence of sex, menstrual cycle, and sex steroid hormones on 3D mental rotation and brain function using 3-T fMRI. Twelve healthy women and 12 men were investigated. Menstrual cycle...

The correlation of anandamide with gonadotrophin and sex steroid hormones during the menstrual cycle

Objective(s): The purpose of this study was to investigate the change in plasma anandamide (AEA) levels throughout the normal menstrual cycle, and to analyze the relationship among AEA, sex steroids and gonadotrophins. Materials and Methods: The patients were fertile women with normal menstrual cycle, proposed to get in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment due to oviduct obstruction or male infe...

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore brain function: cortical representations of language critical areas

Pre-operative determination of the dominant hemisphere for speech and speech associated sensory and motor regions has been of great interest for the neurological surgeons. This dilemma has been of at most importance, but difficult to achieve, requiring either invasive (Wada test) or non-invasive methods (Brain Mapping). In the present study we have employed functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging...

P-137: Sex Hormones Abnormalities and Female Sexual Dysfunction in Multiple Sclerosis Patients

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common cause of progressive neurological disability in young adults who may be sexually active. MS patients experience high levels of sexual dysfunction with hypoactive sexual behavior and abnormalities in hypothalamus- pituitary-gonad (HPG) axis. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the correlation between serum levels of sex hormones durin...
